Target Information
Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors with a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and shared VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. Two alternatively spliced isoforms exist: VEGFB167 and VEGFB186. VEGFB167, a highly basic heparin-binding protein, remains associated with the cell or extracellular matrix, whereas VEGFB186 is readily secreted.
VEGFB stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and binds to the tyrosine kinase receptor VEGFR1 (flt1), but not VEGFR2. It is widely expressed, most abundantly in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression in human primary breast cancers has been associated with lymph node metastasis. The VEGFB gene is mapped to chromosome 11q13.
