Target Information
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (Alpha-1-AT) is synthesized in the liver and functions as an inhibitor of proteases such as trypsin, elastase, chymotrypsin, collagenase, leucocytic proteases, plasmin, and thrombin. These enzymes, when not inhibited, can cause digestion of pulmonary tissue. Deficiency in alpha-1-AT is associated with chronic obstructive lung disease (emphysema) and occasionally hepatic cirrhosis in infants and respiratory distress in newborns. Elevated levels of alpha-1-AT occur as an acute phase response to tissue necrosis and inflammation, and are found in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, bacterial infections, vasculitis, and carcinomatosis.
