Target Information
Serum albumin is a globular, unglycosylated protein of approximately 65 kDa and is the main protein of plasma. It has a high binding capacity for water, fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin, and drugs. The primary function of albumin is to regulate the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood. Albumin is synthesized in the liver as preproalbumin, which undergoes sequential cleavage: first the N-terminal peptide is removed before release from the rough endoplasmic reticulum, producing proalbumin, which is further processed in the Golgi apparatus to yield the secreted albumin.
