Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, which functions in detoxification of electrophilic compounds including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products by conjugation with glutathione.
Genes of the mu class are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic. These variations can affect susceptibility to carcinogens and toxins, as well as drug toxicity and efficacy. Diversification has occurred in substrate-binding domains and tissue expression patterns to accommodate a wide range of foreign compounds.
