AKR1C3는 aldo/keto reductase 초과가족의 구성원으로, 40개 이상의 효소 및 단백질을 포함합니다. 이 효소들은 NADH 및/또는 NADPH를 보조인자로 사용하여 알데하이드와 케톤을 해당 알코올로 전환합니다.
AKR1C3는 prostaglandin D2, PGH2 및 phenanthrenequinone을 환원시키고, 9-alpha,11-beta-PGF2를 PGD2로 산화시킵니다.
천식과 같은 알레르기 질환의 병태생리에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있으며, 세포 성장 및 분화 조절에도 관여할 가능성이 있습니다.
이 유전자는 다른 세 개의 유사 유전자와 높은 서열 동일성을 가지며, 염색체 10p15-p14 영역에 함께 위치합니다.
