Cathepsin L은 약 25 kDa의 heavy chain과 약 5 kDa의 light chain으로 구성된 리소좀 시스테인 단백질분해효소입니다. 다양한 세포 유형에서 발현되며, 세포외기질 단백질을 분해할 수 있어 종양 진행, 전이 및 류머티즘성 관절염, 신경퇴행성 질환 등 세포외기질 파괴가 주요 병인인 질환에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 세포 내 단백질 대사에 중요한 역할을 하는 리소좀 시스테인 단백질분해효소입니다. 기질로는 콜라겐, 엘라스틴, α-1 프로테아제 억제제를 포함하며, 근육병증과 심근 허혈에서의 근원섬유 괴사, 단백뇨에 대한 신세뇨관 반응 등 다양한 병리 과정에 관여합니다. 이 단백질은 peptidase C1 계열에 속하며, 하나의 전구체 단백질로부터 생성된 disulfide 결합된 heavy 및 light chain으로 구성된 이합체 형태입니다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 두 개 이상의 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
