Product Specific Information

Bcl-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis and the founding member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis regulatory proteins. Its anti-apoptotic functions are achieved through modulation of the inner mitochondrial permeability transition pore, which regulates matrix Ca²⁺, pH, and voltage.

Applications Tested: ELISA, Flow Cytometry, Immunohistochemistry, Western Blotting.

Target Information

BCL-2 regulates apoptosis by either inhibiting or promoting cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family can form dimers to modulate apoptosis. For instance, Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak promote cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Constitutive BCL-2 expression, such as translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. In follicular lymphomas, neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of BCL-2 alpha protein, while normal centers are negative. Two transcript variants of BCL-2 differ in their C-terminal ends, and overexpression has been linked to cancers such as B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer.
