The p95 gene (identical to NBS1 and nibrin) is a component of the hMre11/hRad50 double-strand break repair complex.
Mutations in this gene are associated with Nijmegen breakage syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by increased cancer susceptibility, cell cycle checkpoint defects, and sensitivity to ionizing radiation.
This highlights a direct molecular connection between double-strand break repair and cell cycle checkpoint control.
