Target Information
NFS1 (nitrogen fixation 1), also known as NIFS or IscS (cysteine desulfurase), is a member of the class V pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family.
It localizes to the cytoplasm or mitochondrion depending on cytosolic pH. NFS1 shows highest expression in heart and skeletal muscle, with lower expression in liver, brain, and pancreas.
NFS1 catalyzes the removal of sulfur from cysteine to form alanine, supplying inorganic sulfur for iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters. These clusters are essential cofactors in processes such as electron transfer in oxidative phosphorylation, enzymatic catalysis in aconitase and dehydratases, and maintaining structural integrity in DNA repair enzymes like endonuclease III.
