Target Information
Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by beta cells of the pancreatic islets. It regulates carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism by enhancing membrane transport of glucose, amino acids, and certain ions. It promotes glycogen storage, triglyceride formation, and synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. Insulin is a 51-amino acid polypeptide derived from proinsulin, which is cleaved into A and B chains linked by disulfide bonds and one C-peptide molecule. Insulin deficiency leads to diabetes mellitus, a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Insulin is also found in tumors of β-cell origin such as insulinoma.
