Target Information
DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp, are putative RNA helicases. They are involved in various cellular processes including RNA secondary structure alteration, translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Some members are associated with embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division.
The DDX4 gene encodes a DEAD box protein homologous to VASA proteins in Drosophila and other species, specifically expressed in germ cell lineage of both sexes and functioning in germ cell development. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
