Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides and multisubunit proteins.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial T cell receptor complexes, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins in the ER. Unlike soluble ER resident proteins that have a KDEL sequence, calnexin lacks this motif but contains positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER retention.
Calnexin consists of a large luminal domain (461 aa), a transmembrane segment (22 aa), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 aa).
