Target Information
This gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2, encoding an insulin-regulated facilitative glucose transporter.
In the absence of insulin, the protein remains sequestered within muscle and adipose cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it relocates to the cell surface to transport glucose across the membrane.
Mutations in this gene have been linked to noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
