Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the vaccinia-related kinase (VRK) family of serine/threonine protein kinases. It is widely expressed in human tissues and shows increased expression in actively dividing cells such as testis, thymus, fetal liver, and carcinomas. The protein localizes to the nucleus and promotes stability and nuclear accumulation of transcriptionally active p53, phosphorylating Thr18 of p53 and reducing its ubiquitination. It may regulate cell proliferation and also phosphorylates histone, casein, and transcription factors ATF2 and c-JUN.
