Target Information

Cadherins are a multigene family of Ca++-dependent cell adhesion molecules. They are transmembrane glycoproteins consisting of an extracellular domain mediating Ca++-dependent intercellular adhesion by homophilic interactions, a transmembrane region, and a cytoplasmic domain.
The extracellular domain is divided into subdomains EC1–EC5. Homologies among cadherins are most prominent in the cytoplasmic domain and EC1–EC2, less so in EC5 and the transmembrane region. The adhesive binding properties are located in the N-terminal part of the molecules.
Four mammalian cadherins have been identified: neuronal (N), epithelial (E), placental (P), and muscle (M) cadherins. M-cadherin is expressed at low levels in myoblasts and upregulated during myotube formation, indicating its role in skeletal muscle differentiation.
