Target Information
Defensins (alpha and beta) are cationic peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, forming an essential part of the innate immune system.
Alpha-defensins differ from beta-defensins by the pairing of their three disulfide bonds.
Six human beta-defensins (BD-1 to BD-6) have been identified. Beta-defensins are expressed on certain leukocytes and epithelial surfaces.
Beyond antimicrobial activity, they act as chemoattractants for immature dendritic cells and memory T cells.
They are expressed as C-terminal portions of precursors and released via proteolytic cleavage.
Beta-defensins contain a six-cysteine motif forming three intra-molecular disulfide bonds.
