Target Information
Cytokeratin 8 is a member of the type II keratin family located on the long arm of chromosome 12. Type I and II keratins form heteropolymers that create intermediate filaments in epithelial cells. Cytokeratin 8 typically pairs with keratin 18 to form filaments in simple epithelial cells. It plays a role in maintaining cellular structural integrity and contributes to signal transduction and differentiation. Mutations in this gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis.
