Target Information
The NRG3 gene belongs to the neuregulin gene family, encoding ligands for the ERBB3 and ERBB4 tyrosine kinase receptors, which are members of the epidermal growth factor receptor family. Ligand binding activates intracellular signaling cascades, leading to cellular responses such as proliferation, migration, differentiation, and survival or apoptosis.
NRG3 specifically activates ERBB4 receptor phosphorylation and is implicated in neuroblast proliferation, migration, and differentiation. It also promotes mammary differentiation during embryogenesis. Genetic studies suggest that NRG3 may be associated with susceptibility to schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
