Target Information
Contactin 2 (CNTN2), also known as transiently-expressed axonal glycoprotein (AXT, TAX, TAX1, TAG-1, axonin 1), is a neuronal cell adhesion molecule (CAM) involved in axon connection formation during nervous system development.
It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) and contains:
- A glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor
- Six immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains
- Four Fibronectin type III (FNIII)-like domains
Expression & Function:
- Expressed predominantly during neural development on axonal membranes.
- Guides commissural axons without promoting growth.
- Binds NgCAM in cis (same membrane).
- Heterophilic binding (Contactin 2/NgCAM, Contactin 2/NrCAM): localized to first four Ig domains.
- Homophilic binding (Contactin 2/Contactin 2): localized to FNIII domain.
