Target Information
Voltage-dependent chloride channels (CLCs) regulate cellular trafficking of chloride ions, essential for cell function.
CLCs control excitability in muscle and nerve cells, assist in organic solute transport, and maintain cell volume.
Human CLC-1 through CLC-7 genes are located on chromosomes 7, 3q26, 4q32, Xp22, Xp11, 1p36, and 16p13, respectively.
- CLC-1: Highly expressed in skeletal muscle; mutations cause myotonia and renal salt wasting.
- CLC-2: Expressed in epithelial tissues such as lung; potential therapeutic target for cystic fibrosis.
- CLC-3: Abundant in neuronal tissue.
- CLC-4: Expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle as well as brain.
