Target Information
Trypsin is a 24 kDa serine protease enzyme produced in the pancreas as the inactive precursor trypsinogen. The active enzyme functions in the gastrointestinal tract to degrade proteins into large peptides, preferentially cleaving at lysine and arginine residues. One substrate of trypsin is chymotrypsinogen, which it cleaves to form active chymotrypsin. Elevated immunoreactive trypsin levels in the bloodstream may indicate pancreatic dysfunction and are used as a marker in cystic fibrosis screening.
