PIAS1는 E3-type small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) lig아제로서, UBE2I와 기질 간 상호작용을 안정화시키며 SUMO-tethering factor로 작용합니다. 이 단백질은 STAT, p53, 스테로이드 호르몬 신호전달 경로를 포함한 다양한 세포 내 경로의 전사 공조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 또한 고환에서 핵 수용체 전사 공조절자로 작용하며, 안드로겐 수용체 활성 및 정자형성 유지에 관여할 수 있습니다. 전사 공조절, 활성화 또는 억제의 효과는 생물학적 맥락에 따라 달라질 수 있습니다.
