Target Information
AXL is a chronic myelogenous leukemia-associated oncogene also linked to colon cancer and melanoma.
The AXL protein is a receptor tyrosine kinase that transduces signals from the extracellular matrix into the cytoplasm by binding growth factors such as vitamin K-dependent protein GAS6, stimulating cell proliferation.
TAM receptors, including AXL, are involved in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Mice lacking TAM receptors exhibit degenerative phenotypes and autoimmune responses similar to systemic lupus erythematosus.
AXL may also function as an entry receptor for filoviruses and is a marker for Siglec 6+/Axl+ dendritic cells. Cellular expression can be upregulated by TLR ligands (LPS, poly I:C), and soluble AXL levels may indicate inflammation or cancer.
