Target Information

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade upon binding to the c-Met receptor.
It is secreted by mesenchymal cells and acts as a multifunctional cytokine primarily on epithelial cells.
HGF plays a central role in angiogenesis, tumorogenesis, and tissue regeneration.
The inactive precursor is cleaved into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, forming an active heterodimer via a disulfide bond.
Although structurally related to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases, HGF lacks protease activity.
Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
