Target Information

This gene encodes a precursor protein consisting of arginine vasopressin and two associated proteins, neurophysin 2 and a glycopeptide, copeptin.
Arginine vasopressin is a posterior pituitary hormone synthesized in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus.
It is transported to the neurohypophysis within neurosecretory vesicles containing neurophysin 2, where it is stored or secreted into the bloodstream.
Arginine vasopressin acts as a growth factor by enhancing pH regulation, has antidiuretic and vasoconstrictive effects, and is involved in smooth muscle contraction, cognition, tolerance, adaptation, and maternal behavior.
It also regulates water excretion and cardiovascular functions.
