Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding and integral membrane glycoprotein present in presynaptic vesicles in nearly all neurons.
It has four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting involvement in synaptic vesicle endocytosis.
It plays roles in short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity and serves as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation.
Mutations in the gene can lead to mental retardation, X-linked 96.
