Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a T cell stimulatory cytokine that induces T cell proliferation and NK cell activation. Produced by T-cells in response to antigenic or mitogenic stimulation, IL-2 is essential for T-cell proliferation and immune regulation. It can stimulate B-cells, monocytes, lymphokine-activated killer cells, natural killer cells, and glioma cells. The IL-2 receptor is a heterotrimeric complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7. IL-2 also induces CTLA-4 and functions as a survival factor for lymphocytes.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an immunomodulatory cytokine crucial for proliferation of activated T cells and differentiation of B cells, NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric protein complex with a gamma chain shared by IL-4 and IL-7. Expression of the IL-2 gene in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, a unique regulatory mode for precise gene expression. Disruption of the IL-2-like gene in mice leads to an ulcerative colitis-like disease, underscoring its essential role in immune response to antigens.
