Target Information
Arginase catalyzes the hydrolysis of arginine to ornithine and urea. Two isoforms of mammalian arginase (types I and II) differ in tissue distribution, subcellular localization, and physiologic function. The type II isoform, encoded by this gene, is mitochondrial and expressed in extra-hepatic tissues such as kidney. It may play a role in nitric oxide and polyamine metabolism. Transcript variants using alternative polyadenylation sites have been described.
