Target Information

The zinc transporter ZIP12 (SLC39A12) is a member of the divalent ion transporter family. Zinc is an essential ion involved in cellular growth, development, and differentiation. The ZIP family consists of four subfamilies: I, II, LIV-1, and gufA.
ZIP12 is a multipass membrane protein belonging to the LIV-1 subfamily. Elevated ZIP12 expression has been observed during acute airway inflammation and asthma, suggesting its role in promoting zinc uptake to reduce inflammation.
Reduced brain zinc levels and ZIP12 mutations have been reported in some schizophrenia patients, indicating a potential link between ZIP12 and the disease.
