Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors, which mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Recently, glutamate has been shown to regulate enzymes producing second messengers via specific G-protein-coupled receptors, known as metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
Group I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5) stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release.
Group II and III receptors (including mGluR2 and mGluR3) inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
