Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and N-terminal extended mitochondrial forms, differing in translation start sites. The mitochondrial form loses its extension to match the cytoplasmic version. It functions as a homotetramer and shares similarity with thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can result in fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
