Target Information
Taurine is an abundant organic osmolyte with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, contributing to cell volume homeostasis. Taurine uptake occurs via the taurine transporter (TAUT), a sodium- and chloride-dependent multi-pass membrane protein of the sodium neurotransmitter symporter (SNF) family. TNF alpha upregulates TAUT expression, while phosphorylation on Serine 322 downregulates it. Overexpression of TAUT protects renal cells from cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.
