Target Information
This gene encodes a cysteine protease with strict specificity for hydrolysis of asparaginyl bonds. It is involved in processing bacterial peptides and endogenous proteins for MHC class II presentation in lysosomal/endosomal systems. Enzyme activation is triggered by acidic pH and is autocatalytic. Expression occurs after monocytes differentiate into dendritic cells, producing a mature active enzyme following lipopolysaccharide expression. Overexpression may be associated with many solid tumor types. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 13. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described, with biological validity confirmed for two.
