Target Information

Translocation of nuclear encoded preproteins into the mitochondrial matrix requires the coordinated action of the translocases Tom and Tim, located in the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes respectively.
The Tom complex includes multiple subunits such as Tom70, Tom37, Tom22, and Tom20, which function as import receptors, and small structural proteins (Tom7, Tom6, Tom5) forming the import pore (GIP).
The TIM channel imports nuclear-encoded mitochondrial preproteins through Tim17, Tim23, and Tim44, present at equimolar ratios.
Tim17 exists as two isoforms (Tim17a and Tim17b), differing in their C-terminal sequences, and both are ubiquitously expressed. Tim17 and Tim23 form the structural components of the inner membrane channel, while Tim44 recruits matrix Hsp70 to assist preprotein translocation.
