Target Information

Interferon alpha (IFN-α) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. Interaction of IFN-α with its receptor activates multiple signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN-α gene is located on chromosome 9, and the Type I interferon family includes 14 alpha isoforms along with beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa forms. IFN-α is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a key role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity.
Diseases associated with IFN-α dysfunction include Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
