This antibody reacts with both intact C3 and C3b.
Target Information
Inactive complement component 3b (iC3b) is a 42 kDa neoantigen present in blood serum. Cleavage of C3b into iC3b by the protease factor I, in the presence of cofactors, alters the structure and binding properties, preventing binding by complement factor B and properdin. This regulation halts further progression of the complement pathway.
iC3b is believed to play a role in immune tolerance, binding complement receptor type 3 on antigen-presenting cells and inducing production of transforming growth factor beta2 and interleukin-10. It also stimulates B-cells via the CD21 receptor, linking innate and adaptive immune responses. Additionally, iC3b acts as an opsonin recognized by complement receptor 3 on leukocytes or CRIg on Kupffer cells, promoting phagocytosis of tagged cells.
Elevated iC3b levels are often associated with diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
