Target Information

MRPL42 encodes a mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal protein involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL42 gene encodes a protein found in both the 28S and 39S subunits, with multiple transcript variants due to alternative splicing. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 4q, 6p, 6q, 7p, and 15q.
