Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones that play an important role in growth control. The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17. These five genes share a high degree of sequence identity, and alternative splicing results in five isoforms ranging from approximately 19 kDa to 24 kDa.
hGH is produced by somatotroph cells in the pituitary gland and acts through binding to membrane receptors belonging to the cytokine receptor subfamily. Its primary role in stimulating body growth is mediated by inducing the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1. It promotes differentiation and proliferation of myoblasts and enhances amino acid uptake and protein synthesis in muscle and other tissues. Mutations or deletions in the GH1 gene can lead to growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
