Target Information
Calcium Channel gamma-3 (CACNG3) is a member of voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) that enable neurons to tailor calcium signaling to discrete cellular regions. Although N-Type VDCCs are present before birth, most subunit expression occurs postnatally and plays a key role in synaptic transmission in hippocampal fields.
Calcium Channel gamma-3 functions as a type I transmembrane AMPA receptor regulatory protein (TARP), regulating both trafficking and channel gating of AMPA receptors. It belongs to an eight-member protein subfamily within the PMP-22/EMP/MP20 family.
CACNG3 gene dysfunction is associated with susceptibility to childhood absence epilepsy.
