Target Information
The Apoliprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme-catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family is a group of cytidine deaminases acting on monomeric nucleoside and nucleotide substrates.
APOBEC3G plays a major role in cellular defense against retroviral infection, particularly HIV-1, by inducing hypermutation in viral DNA and destabilizing the genome.
HIV-1 Vif protein counteracts this mechanism by promoting ubiquitination and degradation of APOBEC3G. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can block APOBEC3G depletion while maintaining its antiviral activity.
