Target Information
Agouti-related protein (AgRP), also known as agouti-related peptide, is a neuropeptide produced in the brain by AgRP/NPY neurons. In humans, the AgRP gene encodes an antagonist of melanocortin-3 and melanocortin-4 receptors. It regulates hypothalamic control of feeding behavior through melanocortin receptor and/or intracellular calcium signaling, contributing to weight homeostasis. Mutations in this gene are associated with late-onset obesity.
