Target Information
ACER3 is a protein-coding gene encoding an endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi ceramidase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of unsaturated long-chain ceramides, dihydroceramides, and phytoceramides into sphingoid bases such as sphingosine and free fatty acids at alkaline pH.
Ceramides, sphingosine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate are bioactive lipids involved in cellular signaling pathways that regulate proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation.
ACER3 controls sphingosine generation in erythrocytes and consequently sphingosine-1-phosphate levels in plasma. It may also play a role in neuronal survival and function by maintaining lipid homeostasis in the brain and modulating inflammatory responses through regulation of ceramide levels in immune cells.
