이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 다른 carbonic anhydrase 유전자들과의 서열 유사성으로 인해 처음에는 CA-related protein으로 명명되었습니다. 그러나 이 단백질은 탄산 무수화 효소 활성이 없으며, 서열 상의 유사성으로 인해 carbonic anhydrase 패밀리 내에 포함됩니다.
마우스의 신경학적 결함 모델인 lurcher mutant에서 소뇌 내 CA8 유전자 전사가 결여되어 있어, 이 비촉매형 단백질이 중요한 생리학적 역할을 할 가능성이 제시됩니다.
