Target Information
TEF1 (Transcriptional enhancer factor 1), a member of the TEA/ATTS domain family, is a nuclear protein expressed in numerous cell types and involved in regulating the expression of various genes. TEF family members have a highly conserved DNA-binding domain. TEF-1 binds to GT-IIC, SphI/II, and M-CAT sequences, as well as the proximal regulatory element (PRE) of transforming growth factor-alpha, which is overexpressed in many cancers. TEF-1 represses transcription in placental cells and is phosphorylated by several PKC isozymes, both in vitro and in vivo, at serine and threonine residues. Phosphorylation reduces its DNA-binding ability, suggesting a role in PKC inhibition. TEF-1 also forms complexes with the large tumor antigen (TAg), implying a potential role in tumorigenesis. Dimerization may be essential for TEF-1 function as a transcriptional regulator.
