Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding and integral membrane glycoprotein present in presynaptic vesicles of almost all neurons. It has four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin is involved in regulating short- and long-term synaptic plasticity and is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumors. Mutations in the gene can result in mental retardation, X-linked 96.
