Target Information
Karyopherin is a cytosolic and heterodimeric protein complex composed of alpha and beta subunits. It mediates the transport of proteins containing nuclear localization signals to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) via an energy-dependent, Ran-mediated mechanism.
The alpha subunit and imported substrate accumulate in the nucleoplasm, while the beta subunit localizes at the NPC.
KPNA6, a member of the KPNA subfamily (including IPOA5 & IPOA6), plays a crucial role in nuclear import. Down-regulation of KPNA6 in HeLa cells inhibits cell proliferation, likely due to impaired nuclear import of essential growth factors. KPNA6 also interacts with the HIV-1 Rev protein, facilitating its nuclear import.
