Target Information
SERT (Serotonin Transporter) is an integral membrane protein that transports serotonin from synaptic spaces into presynaptic neurons. It terminates serotonin action and recycles it in a sodium-dependent manner. SERT is a target of psychomotor stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine and belongs to the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family.
A repeat length polymorphism in the promoter region of this gene can affect serotonin uptake rate and may be associated with sudden infant death syndrome, aggressive behavior in Alzheimer’s disease, and depression susceptibility under emotional stress.
