Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen inducing fever in autoimmune diseases or infections. It is expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, secreted into serum, and activates transcriptional inflammatory responses through the interleukin 6 receptor alpha. IL-6 function is implicated in various inflammation-associated diseases, including susceptibility to diabetes mellitus and systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels have been observed in viral infections such as COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Diseases associated with IL6 include Kaposi Sarcoma and Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
