Target Information
Endostatin induces non-uniform responses in proliferation, cell adhesion, and migration of endothelial cells, depending on the cell type. It inhibits angiogenesis and tumor growth in vivo by inducing apoptosis in endothelial cells. Local delivery of endostatin reduces tumor-associated microvessel density, diameter, and functionality, thereby suppressing tumor cell migration and invasion. Endostatin is non-toxic and does not induce acquired drug resistance, making it a promising therapeutic candidate for solid tumors such as gliomas. Its anti-angiogenic activity is partly mediated by Zn²⁺ binding and elastase processing. Endostatin is widely expressed in elastic fibers of vessel walls and basement membranes and is released by neurons to accumulate in amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease.
