Target Information
IPO11 functions as a nuclear transport receptor involved in nuclear protein import. It recognizes nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates and mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through nucleoporin binding. The complex is translocated through the pore via a Ran-dependent mechanism. Ran binding at the nucleoplasmic side facilitates dissociation of the importin/substrate complex, and importin is re-exported to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. The asymmetric distribution of Ran-GTP and Ran-GDP between cytoplasm and nucleus confers directionality of nuclear import. IPO11 mediates nuclear import of UBE2E3 and RPL12.
